Savvy Supply School is a little different…
Our mission on this course is to prove to you that you don’t need ALL THE THINGS to make amazing pieces of art. In fact we’ll be actively encouraging you to work with what you’ve got and NOT buy any new stuff!
Our team have worked with commonplace supplies that many mixed media fans will have already and everything else is recycled, salvaged, found in your house or sourced inexpensively on the high street. We’ll show you how to get creative with the basics and think outside the box with your other supplies. We’ll prove to you that using found and free supplies can still result in incredible, professional-looking, stunning arty creations!
As well as expanding your creative toolkit, you’ll learn to make DIY texture pastes, stamps and stencils and create bespoke embellishments. You’ll create assemblage, journal pages, home décor, handmade journals, a scrapbook page and more!

Frequently asked questions
How does the school work?
The summer school begins on 3rd January 2020 and runs for a period of 12 weeks over January, February and March 2020, with 2-3 lessons being released per week. Each time a new lesson is released we will email you and post the information in the student Facebook group. Lessons are accessible via this site – simply log in and access your My Courses page (don’t worry, we’ll send you full instructions when you enrol).
In our Facebook group we will also have additional content to enhance your enjoyment! There will be the opportunity to ask questions about any of the lessons in the course, and many of the tutors will be available in the group to help and guide you.
Who is this course aimed at?
This course is aimed at anyone and everyone who is interested in being adventurous and experimental with their art! It’s a great course if you’re looking for new ideas or want to save money buying less stash.
As our tutors have worked with a relatively small, commonplace selection of supplies (more info below), this course is very suitable for beginners who don’t have a huge stash of goodies. Some lessons are more difficult than others but we’d encourage beginners to give it a go, because with our comprehensive and easy-to-follow tutorials and the hands-on support you’ll receive through our Facebook group, we think you’ll love it and get a lot of benefit from this course.
For more advanced crafters, there is plenty of scope to learn different and new ways to be creative through this course, especially if you haven’t explored frugal, found and free supplies much before.
How will I benefit from the school?
The aim of the school is to enable to you explore some different, fun and inexpensive ways to get more from your art and craft supplies. It’s an opportunity to be more creative with your existing supplies and make pieces that are totally unique to you. Hopefully we will encourage you to work more effectively with the supplies you have, and explore inexpensive alternative tools and materials – both of which can help you reduce your spend on supplies, if that’s something you’d like to do.
How is the course taught?
We have a mixture of teaching and presentation styles throughout the course, which helps to keep learning with us varied and interesting. We have video project tutorials (17) and step-by-step photo tutorials (9). Each lesson has downloadable content.
Unlike some teaching sites, we don’t just plonk a video on a web page and call it a course. Our courses are beautifully presented on-screen, with lots of supporting information like an introduction from your tutor, a supplies list, and their bio information in case you’d like to follow them online in future. Our step-by-step tutorials are fully laid out on screen for easy reading – you don’t have to read anything off a PDF unless you want to!
How much time will I need to commit?
The simple answer is as much or as little as you like but you will benefit most if you can commit some time over the 12 weeks the course is running to get involved with our Facebook group. Being a part of the group will enable you to take advantage of the opportunity to ask questions and get feedback on your creations. We will keep the Facebook group open beyond the end of the course to enable a catch-up period.
Access to the course is lifetime and you can simply go back to the modules again at any time by logging into the site. We also provide downloadable versions of the content for you to store and view offline, if you wish.
What supplies do I need?
The aim of this course is to give you ideas and techniques using the things you find around you, that you can take away and apply to your own creative processes.
Our team were asked to work with commonplace supplies that many mixed media fans will already have in their stash. Everything else is recycled, salvaged, found in your house or sourced inexpensively on the high street.
Most of the projects can done with just this core kit (any brand will do):
- Acrylic paints (a set will make your life easier, but at a minimum you need red, blue, yellow, black and white – using these colours you can mix lots of variants)
- Gel medium
- White modelling paste
- White gesso
- Permanent black pen
- White paint pen
- Black permanent inkpad
- Mixed media paper or watercolour paper
- PVA glue
- Basics like pencil, craft knife, scissors, ruler, paintbrushes
The following supplies are also used in one or two projects: a gel printing plate, brown liquid ink, coloured paint pens, sewing machine (you can always substitute hand-stitching), water-soluble pencil
For their finished projects, our designers have added their own favourite supplies, like stamps, stencils, die cuts or chipboard shapes. We haven’t included these items in your supply list because they are not required to do the course lessons – you can substitute anything you have in your stash to finish off your creations.
Do I need to be on Facebook to do this course?
No, not at all. The Facebook group is an optional extra – all the course learning content is self-contained on this website. The intention of the Facebook group is to add a community dimension to the learning experience, enabling you to chat with like-minded souls, interact with your tutors, and get support and advice with the lessons. We will have bonus content in the group, but it will be hints, tips and ideas rather than tutorials – all the learning content and downloadable extras will be available via this site.
Can I access the course on mobile devices?
Yes absolutely! Our website has been designed to be used on a variety of platforms, including smartphones and tablets. The layout of the pages will look a little different on a smaller mobile screen, to make them easier to read, but all the content is exactly the same.
Note you will need an internet/WIFI connection to view the courses online but we also provide downloadable PDF and video content which can be viewed offline for your convenience.
Do AcademyPlus subscribers get a discount?
Yes, of course you do, you lovely people! There will be a special discounted rate exclusively for AcademyPlus subscribers, which means the course is cheaper for you folks than everyone else. Make sure you are logged in before purchasing to get the special reduced rate.
What is your refund policy?
As this is a digital course, we regret that refunds cannot be issued once any content has been added to the course. This is because you will get instant access to online content and downloadable resources, which by their nature cannot be returned. We will of course consider cases for refunds on an individual basis where there are extenuating circumstances.
