Frequently asked questions
How does the summer school work?
The summer school runs for a period of 6 weeks over July and August 2019, with 3-4 lessons being released per week. Each time a new lesson is released we will email you and post the information in the private Facebook group. Lessons are accessible via this site – simply log in and access your My Courses page (don’t worry, we’ll send you full instructions when you enroll).
In our Facebook group we will also have additional content to enhance your enjoyment! We’ll have some pre-school work running during June, which will form the basis of our ongoing journal project. Over the duration of the course there will be regular creative prompts and we’ll work to together to create a mini journal as a memento of your time on the summer school.
In the group there will be the opportunity to ask questions about any of the lessons in the course, and many of the tutors will be available in the group to help and guide you.
We will have additional bonus content too, including prize draws from our tutors and partners and fun freebies for you to download and keep.
How will I benefit from the summer school?
The aim of the school is to enable to you explore your creative processes in a way that lets you think about how they can have a therapeutic benefit and form part of your self-care regime.
Although we do have experts working with us, this course is not a treatment for any type of mental health condition and we make no claims regarding the efficacy of any of the exercises presented as part of the course. The course is purely for enjoyment purposes but we believe it will help you to explore for yourself how art can contribute towards a better sense of wellbeing.
How is the course taught?
We have a real mixture of teaching and presentation styles throughout the course, which helps to keep learning with us varied and interesting. We have video project tutorials, step-by-step photo tutorials, and articles packed with information and tips around our topic. Our lessons vary from in-depth exercises which will make you think and reflect, to projects that are more lightweight and fun. As well as lots of inspiring art, our lessons include content from experts in Mindfulness and Art Therapy, to help you grow your knowledge and understanding around the theme of mental wellbeing.
Unlike some teaching sites, we don’t just plonk a video on a web page and call it a course. Our courses are beautifully presented on-screen, with lots of supporting information like an introduction from your tutor, a supplies list, and their bio information in case you’d like to follow them online in future. Our step-by-step tutorials are fully laid out on screen for easy reading – you don’t have to read anything off a PDF unless you want to!
How much time will I need to commit?
The simple answer is as much or as little as you like but you will benefit most if you can commit some time over the six weeks the course is running to get involved with our Facebook activities and take advantage of the opportunity to ask questions in that group. We will keep the Facebook group open beyond the end of the course to enable a catch-up period.
Access to the course is lifetime and you can simply go back to the modules again at any time by logging into the site. We also provide downloadable versions of the content for you to store and view offline, if you wish.
What supplies do I need?
The aim of this course is to give you tools, techniques, and exercises to take away that you can apply to all your creative processes. We encourage you to create with what you have, using the prompts and ideas put forward in the lessons. We are not suggesting you make any purchases for this course but access to a printer would be advantageous as we’ll be supplying some printable content for you to use.
Some of the lessons focus on art journaling so you may wish to have a journal to play with as we go. However, we’re kicking off with several ideas of how to create your own bespoke journal using basic supplies, so there is really no need to go out and buy one.
Most lessons will be using mixed media basics such as acrylic paints, pens, stamps, stencils and the like. Some use more specific mediums, which include: watercolour paints, air-dry clay, coloured pencils, and a shrine kit (or you use an old sardine can). We have two scrapbooking classes in the mix, but you can adapt the ideas using mixed media supplies instead if you don’t own scrapbooking papers and embellishments.
Can I access the course on mobile devices?
Yes absolutely! Our website has been designed to be used on a variety of platforms, including smartphones and tablets. The layout of the pages will look a little different on a smaller mobile screen, to make them easier to read, but all the content is exactly the same.
Note you will need an internet/WIFI connection to view the courses online but we also provide downloadable PDF and video content which can be viewed offline for your convenience.
Do AcademyPlus subscribers get a discount?
Yes, of course you do, you lovely people! There will be a special discounted rate exclusively for AcademyPlus subscribers, which means the course is cheaper for you folks than everyone else. A coupon will be sent to you via your email newsletter before we go on general sale.
What is the 'pre-school'?
Our pre-school is a series of lessons that launch before our official start date on 1st July. The aim of these lessons is to prepare for our group activities that will take place on Facebook over the duration of the Summer School. We’ll create some prompt cards and a mini journal, which we can use to create a memento of the course as we go.
Pre-school lessons start 14th June, but if you join later, don’t worry – you’ll still get access to the lessons.
